Featured: Mimomito

We are in the thick of the Chirstmas season and there is not an Estate Sale to be found and the market for Tickle Me Elmo is temporarily hotter than the home furnishings market.  For these reasons I don't have a lot of new personal content to blog about this week.  This weekend I was down in Sacramento attending my brother's college graduation.  I couldn't help but check out the local vintage scene.  This lead me to a delightful little shop in the heart of Mid Town called Scout Living.  The owners, Stefan and Erin, were wonderful to meet and shared with me their love of modern desing as well as the joys and woes store ownership.  Stefan and Erin rent out a portion of their store to local pickers.  Together they write a clever blog called mimomito .  This blog has a fresh feeling because it has several contributors.  They also do regular posts on certain topics.  My favorite are Homes Sweet Homes and Do Not Want: Craigslists Worst.  In the past I have consided posting about hideous items on Craigslist but I am too afraid of making enemies.
Here are a few pics from the blog that I especially liked.

Under Construction: Reclaimed Wood Coffee Table

Lately I have been wanting to make a coffee table out of reclaimed wood and hairpin legs.  Hairpin legs can be quite expensive if you buy them new, so I have been looking for any furniture at estate sales that I could take them off of.  Last weekend I found a hidious red velvet bench with hairpin legs.  The top is now in my scrap pile with countless ottoman cushions.  Then I went to The Rebuilding Center on N. Mississippi St. and picked up some old fence posts.  Over the past couple days I have cut out all of the materials and assembled the table top.  Once the wood glue was dry I put the legs on.  Sold $150
All of the piece cut and mocked up

Top surface boards after being sanded with 120 & 220 sandpaper
Stained the boards with Minwax Natural stain
Assembled the pieces with 18 gauge nails and wood glue

The white seen around the edges is good glue.  It has been removed since the pictures were taken.

Tis the Season

This Sunday (12/11) I am partaking in the Christmas festivities by selling my goods at the Rose City Collector's Market.  This is a monthly show that I always attend.  Venders come from near and far to sell at this show.  I am always impressed by the quality of the antique and collectible merchandise.  All of the sellers are serious collectors (no garage sale leftovers).   My tables will be full of antique medical bottles, barware, owl figurines, dollhouse miniatures, Christmas collectibles, and several handmade coffee tables.  My booth will also feature vintage dresses by local vender Garb-Oh Vintage.
Here is what you need to know:
Airport Holiday Inn's Columbia Conference Center
8521 NE Columbia Blvd. Portland, Oregon

Sunday Dec. 11th:  9AM-3PM $2 Admission - Early Admission: 7 am $6

West Side Pickin'

The Willamete River devides Portland into to sides, the east side and the west side.  The east side is the industrial / blue color side of town.  The west side is the more affluent white collar side of town.  Competition is ususally much stiffer for sales on the west side because that is where the wealthier people live.  As a humble eastsider I usally pick on my side of the river.  This weekend all of the best sales were on the west side.  As expected everybody was out picking.  I was pretty far back in line at each sale.  Of the three sales I was # 22, 41, & 65.  Dispite my poor positioning I still got some great stuff.
Pair of Handmade Mid Century Cabinets. Sold $100

 Matching Handmade Credenza.  Sold $175

Vintage Lounge Chair and Ottoman.  Sold $150

Unique Vintage Rocking Chair.  Sold $55
I got a great deal on some hairpin legs for my next furniture project.
This Kevin Sorbo signed photo was too rad to pass up.
I am sure it will make a great white elephant gift for someone
