Weekend Round Up

This weekend I switched up my picking strategy a little.  I picked just one sale each day and tried to get a good spot in line each time.  Then on Sunday I went to all the sales for half off and to place bids.  The strategy worked pretty well.  I saved on gas money and got good deals on the items I picked up.

Framed Rosie the Riveter Print.  For Sale $30 at Antique Alley

Walnut Glass Top Coffee Table.  Sold $100

 Drexel Credenza.  Sold $295

Retro Love Seat Recliner.  For Sale $150

I also picked up a steel workbench, milk crate, and bovine injection kit which were all sold to local shops before I had a chance to take pictures of them.

Under Construction: Heywood Wakefield(esque) Dining Table

During the middle of the week when there are no sales to attend I often peruse a strip of thrift stores near my home.  I rarely find anything, but it keeps me entertained.  The first shop I walked into had this amazing table. It was clearly designed in the style of Heywood Wakefield with bold curved legs and a wheat finish.  Being that it was not a designer piece the top was a wood veneer.  I stood there for about 10 minutes trying to figure out if it could be brought back to life.  Ultimately I could not leave without it.  Here is the story of my attempt to restore it.

I am a sucker for a good set of legs.

Table top "as purchased" with two leafs inserted

Table top after sanding.  The veneer was much thinner than I anticipated.  I went right through it in several places.

 Oops!
Freshly stained with a coat of Winwax Express Color: Pecan.  One hour later I added a second coat

Leaves after sanding and first coat of pecan stain.  I was much more careful with my sander this time.

Finished Product!

I added two coats of Minwax® Polycrylic® Protective Finish after the second coat of pecan finish.

Sold For $75

Handmade: Typeset Tray Coffee Table

I just finished making a custom typset tray coffee table with hairpin legs for a client.  I made one in December and it got a lot of interest.  After about a week of searching I found a typesetters tray at Rejuvenation, got glass cut at Coast Mirror, and found hairpin legs at the Clark County Antique Fair.  I assembled in all in about a couple hours.  Here is the end result.  For Sale $175.

Weekend Round Up: It's Picking Up

I was without my camera all week so I was unable to post pictures of what I was getting all week.
Here is a summary of the what I was able to pick this week.

With the Christmas season in our rear view mirror sales are picking up again.  It seems like this was the first weekend in about two months where there were too many sales to go to them all.  I got pretty high up on the list at several choice sales and walked away with some great loot.

My favorite find of this weekend was this Kent Coffee Dresser set.  The styling of the mirror is somewhat reminiscent of Heywood Wakefield.  Sold $475
The Floating legs on each piece is a nice touch.
A splendid tall boy dresser with atomic style.

This logo is branded in the top drawer of each dresser.
Solid walnut gate leg dining table.  Sold $150
Clean lines could match either modern or classic chairs

Retro Magazine Rack $22.  For Sale at Antique Alley

Samsonite Wardrobe Trunk with deer leather exterior. $50

Heywood Wakefield School Desk and Chair.  $75 at Antique Alley
Now your kid can do homework in style!
Yes! It's a genuine Heywood Wakefield!

Pair of mid century lounge chairs with retro fabric.  They sold within hours of posting for $250
